Nama asli benteng ini Qila-i-Mubarak. Sebutannya semasa Shahjahan Qila-i-Mualla. Karena strukturnya berbahan dasar sandstone merah jadilah ia kondang dengan Lal Qila, Benteng Merah. Diarsiteki Ustad Ahmad Lahori, Lal Qila diselesaiakn dalam 9 tahun. Peletakan batu pertamanya, sesui petunjuk juru nujum istana, dilakukan 29-April-1639.
